Amazon Cited for Failure to Properly Record Work-related Injuries and Illnesses

OSHA has cited Amazon with 14 recordkeeping violations for failing to properly record work-related injuries and illnesses following inspections at six warehouse facilities in five states. On July 18, 2022, inspections were conducted in Deltona, Florida; Waukegan, Illinois; and New Windsor, New York. On Aug. 1, 2022, inspections continued in Aurora, Colorado; Nampa, Idaho; and Castleton, New York.

The citations—which resulted in $29,008 in proposed penalties—included:

  • Failing to record injuries and illnesses

  • Misclassifying injuries and illnesses

  • Not recording injuries and illnesses within the required time frame

  • Not providing OSHA with timely injury and illness records

“Solving health and safety problems in the workplace requires injury and illness records to be accurate and transparent,” said Assistant Secretary for Occupational Safety and Health Doug Parker. “Our concern is that nothing will be done to keep an injury from recurring if it isn’t even recorded in the logbook, which—in a company the size of Amazon—could have significant consequences for a large number of workers.”

Even though the investigations are still ongoing in the six locations, OSHA issued the recordkeeping citations at this time to ensure they were issued within six months to comply with federal law requirements.

Amazon has 15 business days following the receipt of each citation and proposed penalty to comply, request an informal conference with OSHA’s area director or contest the findings. For more information, contact us today.
